Ritual cloths of Dnipro river region

Photo album "Ritual cloths of Dnipro river region of Ukraine" is part of the series "Ukrainian Folk Art" - Lviv: Institute of Ukrainian Artefacts Collecting, 2017. - 376 p. Compiled by Taras Lozynsky, layout and reproductions by Andriy Kis.

The publication presents the most striking examples of embroidered and woven cloths of the late seventeenth and early twentieth centuries from Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, and other Dnipro regions from museum and private collections. Woven cloths with geometric patterns from Sivershchyna and Polissya are considered to be the oldest.

Researchers consider this tradition to be the successor of the culture of the Poliany, a tribe of buckwheat farmers. However, in the ornamentation of Dnipro river cloths we can find traces of more ancient cultures - the composition of the Tree of Life refers to the Vedic tradition, which, according to some sources, could have migrated from the banks of the Dnipro to Iran and India more than 6,000 years ago.
